Writing an English CV: Sample, Action Verbs and Translation Traps

Literal translation of an Arabic CV is what weakens most English CVs. Long sentences, generic adjectives like 'hardworking and loyal', and duty-style phrases instead of achievements read oddly to an international recruiter. This guide shows how to rework your experience into short, direct English with a sample and ready verbs, then build both versions on one platform.

Structure of an English CV

Name and contact details, then a three-line Professional Summary, Experience in reverse chronological order, then Education, Skills and Certifications. Each role shows title, company and dates, followed by short bullets starting with a past-tense verb for earlier jobs and present tense for your current one.

Strong verbs instead of generic phrases

Use verbs such as Led, Built, Reduced, Increased, Delivered, Negotiated and Automated. Instead of 'Was responsible for the sales team', write 'Led a team of 6 sales reps and increased quarterly revenue by 22%'. It is shorter, clearer and carries a measurable result.

Common translation mistakes

Rendering 'الخبرة العملية' literally as Practical Experience instead of Work Experience, including marital status, religion and date of birth in markets that do not ask for them, and spelling your name differently from your passport. Keep your name identical to your passport everywhere.

Two versions, one set of data

Keep an Arabic version for local employers and an English one for international companies, and update them together. Our platform builds both from one data set and checks the English version against a job description to suggest missing keywords.

Frequently asked questions

Should I write my CV in Arabic or English?

English for international companies and large projects, Arabic for local employers addressing an Arabic-speaking audience. Ideally prepare both.

Can I translate my CV automatically?

AI can help with phrasing, but review the text yourself and make sure job titles match what companies use in the target country.

Should I add a photo to an English CV?

Usually not in the US, Canada or the UK. Some Gulf and European employers accept one, but photos are not machine-readable and can break the layout.
