The UK CV Format Recruiters Expect

In Britain the term CV is closer to the American resume, with some important differences: it usually runs to two pages, leaves out a photo, date of birth and marital status, and uses British spelling. Large UK employers use screening systems to filter applications, so this guide combines the UK CV style with machine-readability requirements.

Length and order

Two pages at most for most roles. Open with a two-to-four line Personal Statement, then Experience in reverse chronological order, then Education and Skills. Quantify achievements and avoid long paragraphs, because recruiters skim page one.

What to leave out

A photo, date of birth, nationality and marital status, which are discouraged for equal-opportunity reasons. Also drop 'references available on request' and use the space for achievements.

British spelling and terms

Use organised, specialised and programme rather than American spellings, and write dates as month then year. Use familiar UK terms such as Line Manager, Placement Year and A-levels where relevant.

Sponsored roles and visas

If you apply from abroad, state your right-to-work position clearly and phrase your job title close to recognised occupation classifications so the recruiter can map it. Send a clean, machine-readable CV without complex design elements.
